Montana Backcountry: One Mule Deer, Three Wolves

Some hunts go the way you planned. This one didn’t. We rolled into the Montana backcountry chasing bulls and grinding steep country, and after days of close calls and passes on bulls that just weren’t the right one, the trip pivoted in ways nobody predicted.

The Pivot

A last-minute mountain mule deer stepped into range and we capitalized. That’s western hunting in a sentence — you go in chasing one species and come out with a story about another.

The Wolves

Then the hunt got loud. Not one wolf. Not two. A full pack came through the country, and we found ourselves filming an encounter most hunters never get to see, let alone in 4K.
